Episode 92: Dystopias, Utopias and Post-Apocalytpic Sh*t, Part 2

Andi and Lise just can’t get enough of this theme, and they had another discussion about how these themes play out in various elements of popular culture, how the visual elements produce certain feelings, and the role of the environment and corporations run amuck. Some of the movies and TV shows that came up were Anna and the ApocalypseBladerunner 1982 and 2049Shaun of the DeadFireflyStar Wars series, TerminatorDivergent, Hunger GamesDemolition ManZombieland one and twoFury Road, The Stand (1994 and forthcoming updater), and Resident Evil

Shout-outs!

Lise has been playing Civilization 6 on the Xbox, and she’s finding it kind of relaxing in these times while Andi finally began watching teen noir series Veronica Mars (who’s a high school detective!) and she’s already binged two seasons.

Episode 91: Dystopias, Utopias, and Post-Apocalyptic Sh*t

This week, Andi and Lise talk about various media they’ve consumed with dystopic, utopic, and post-apocalyptic themes that have stuck with them. They explore the weird links between dystopia and utopia and how an apocalypse can underlie those, and how characterization and relationships play out in these kinds of scenarios. Points of discussion include the games BioshockFallout, and The Last of Us; the movie Logan’s Run and A Clockwork OrangeThe Island; brief mentions of The MatrixStar Trek, The Handmaid’s TaleHunger GamesBladerunner; and Jean Stewart’s Isis book series. Plus other rando things that struck them as they unpack some of this.

Shout-outs!

Lise highly recommends the book The Space Between Worlds by Micaiah Johnson, which is a novel dealing with travel between worlds that reveals a secret that threatens the entire existence of the multiverse.

Andi is watching, on Apple TV, Visible: Out on Television, a docuseries that explores the visibility of LGBTQ people on television since the 50s and 60s.

Episode 70: A New Year of Geeking Out!

Andi and Lise are getting ready for a new year of geeking out! They each chat about movies they’re looking forward to, books/authors they want to read and other geekly things. To that end, here are some things they’re looking forward to:

Movies:
Wonder Woman 1984 (trailer)
Possibly the re-make of Dune, though both are a little more cautious of that. (trailer)
No Time to Die (latest James Bond; trailer)

Books:
Lise is looking forward to more Seanan McGuire
Andi will be reading more Rebecca Roanhorse and N.K. Jemisin
Both Andi and Lise are really looking forward to reading more diverse spec fic. Here’s a good anthology to get started finding some authors: New Suns: Original Speculative Fiction by People of Color

TeeVee:
Andi is finally watching the animated series Star Wars: Rebels and she’s loving it; she’s also watching the latest season of Dr. Who (Jodie Whittaker as the Doctor); and will be continuing on with her usual series.

Gaming:
Lise is stoked to check out Cyberpunk 2077 (info).

Episode 53: A Walk Down Memory Lane, Part 2

Andi and Lise take another stroll down memory lane, this time chatting about gaming and cosplay and Andi cleverly makes sure that Lise talks about both of those because SHE’S REALLY GOOD AT THEM! And Andi had all kinds of questions for her.

The games that got Lise started: Zelda and Quest games like King’s Quest. She was also into Elder Scrolls and open world role-playing games. She also plays FalloutBorderlandsMass Effect, and is currently designing some cosplay elements from Skyrim (Elder Scrolls). Also, heads up on the forthcoming Outer Worlds!

Lise posts photos of some of the things she’s designing and creating for her cosplay on her Twitter feed. (@LiseMactague) and you can find some of her other stuff at her Etsy shop: Weapons Workbench.

Also, Lise geeks waaaaay out about Kameron Hurley’s latest novel, The Light Brigade (see episode 52). Andi mentioned the new seasons of Into the Badlands, Legends of Tomorrow, and Killing Eve as things she’s looking forward to.

Episode 21: Gaming with Meghan O’Brien

While Andi’s away, Lise will play, and what better way to do so than by sitting down for a chat with Meghan O’Brien. Not only is Meghan a fantastic author of lesfic, but she is also an avid gamer.

Lise and Meghan discuss some of the obstacles of gaming as women, which games they’ve gotten into in the past, and the upcoming games they’re itching to get their hands on.
