Episode 136: She-Hulk: Attorney at Law: One and Done/Fun

This week, Andi and Lise are doing a new kind of segment, in which they watch one episode (generally the first) of a series and determine if it’s One and Done (won’t watch anymore) or One and Fun, in which case they’re willing to go on and watch more episodes. 

They’re starting with the 2022 Marvel series She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, available on Disney Plus. Tatiana Maslany is attorney Jennifer Walters, cousin of Bruce Banner. Because of an accident, she ends up with Hulk-ness like her cousin, but with some twists. The show plays for laughs but digs into issues that affect Jen on the job and that deal with operating in the world as a woman. The first episode introduces us to Jen and how she acquired Hulk-ness and how it affects her.

Episode 123: Black Widow

Andi and Lise discuss the 2021 Marvel blockbuster film Black Widow, starring Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff and Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Natasha’s sister. One of the overarching themes that Andi and Lise really enjoyed is the exploration of family – what it is, what makes it, and how it can create an infrastructure in your life whether you want it to or not. We love superhero movies fronted by women (passes the Bechdel test!) and we love them more when they explore the complicated nature of family dynamics. Great pacing and special effects, great interactions between characters.

Episode 68: Women and Comics, Part 1

Andi and Lise talk about portrayals of superhero women in comics and the revealing clothing and sexualization of their bodies (and yes, they’ve also noticed the trend of increased and unrealistic musculature of male superheroes). They chat, too, about how indie comics might be taking the lead on better representation of female superheroes and badass women.

Episode 54: Captain Marvel

Andi and Lise saw the movie Captain Marvel starring Brie Larson as Carol Danvers/Marvel and they LOVED it, but also, there are some things they noticed that they bring up in their chat.

Set in the 1990s, Marvel Studios’ “Captain Marvel” is an adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that follows the journey of Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes. While a galactic war between two alien races (the Kree and the Skrulls) reaches Earth, Danvers develops a small cadre of allies at the center of the maelstrom. –from Marvel Cinematic Universe Wiki

Also, Lise recommends the 2018 sci-fi movie Annihilation (certain trope not withstanding) while Andi suggests the 2019 movie Shazam! – great for all ages.

Episode 38: Thor: Ragnarok

Andi and Lise watched (okay, re-watched because they dig this movie) Thor: Ragnarok (2017), part of the Marvel Universe movie, which means it’s a giant bucket of special effects, awesome cinematography, and epic battle scenes. But what this Thor movie brought – and something Andi and Lise totally enjoyed – was a slightly comedic turn amidst the dark subject matter, and we get to see a lighter side of Thor even as he struggles to get back to Asgard before the prophecy of Ragnarök comes to pass in which Asgard is destroyed.

Particular favorites in this film include Cate Blanchett’s amazing turn as Hela, Goddess of Death (seriously, we could watch Blanchett write a grocery list and be enthralled, but her turn as a villain is awesome!); Tessa Thompson as “Scrapper 142”—a Valkyrie, also from Asgard (more movies with her, please); director Taika Waititi voicing Korg, a being made of rocks who is the world’s nicest slacker revolutionary; and Jeff Goldblum as an earnest and “fun-uncle-ish” despot on Sakaar, a planet made of trash.

Episode 12: Ms Marvel

Lise and Andi rave about the Marvel comic Ms Marvel, whose latest incarnation features Pakistani-American Muslim teen Kamala Khan in Jersey City who is a total fangirl of Captain Marvel (Carol Danvers). Andi loves that Ms Marvel was a fangirl before she was a superhero. Then one day Kamala wakes up with super powers and she has to learn how to negotiate this new aspect to her life, dealing with the powers and what she feels is her responsibility to help people now that she has them along with her grades, her classes, and her family life.

It’s basically teenage angst – something all of us can probably relate to – along with the added angst of having super powers and trying to figure out how best to use them when you’re only 16-17 AND attempt to negotiate the landmines that come in any family as you’re figuring out who you are and who you want to be. Two big Ms Marvel thumbs up on this one, friends.

Episode 9: Guardians of the Galaxy 2

Andi and Lise teamed up (kind of) and went to see the movie Guardians of the Galaxy 2. “Team up” in this case means they went to see the movie within a couple days of each other.

In this space opera romp, humor abounds with the Guardians’ team – Peter Quill, Gamora, Rocket, Drax, and Groot – who manage to anger The Sovereign, a super arrogant race of humanoids that, like Terminators, just don’t quit if they feel they’ve been wronged. In addition, the team unravels the mystery of Quill’s parentage (Andi refers to this as the “ Who’s yer daddy” plotline) and they end up having to save the galaxy (literally) from a power-mad entity.

All in the span of about two hours of non-stop action, great ol’ skool music (like the first movie), and awesome special effects, though they do have a request: More Gamora and Nebula, pleeeez!

Andi and Lise also recommend that if you haven’t seen the first (Guardians of the Galaxy), do. Because this one will make much more sense to you and you’ll understand the in-jokes and the backstories. Unless you’re a comics reader and you’re familiar with the series, in which case, have at!
