Episode 142: A Pale Light in the Black, by K.B. Wagers

Andi and Lise loved K.B. Wagers’ A Pale Light in the Black, the first installment of Wagers’ NeoG series. Episode 48: The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet

Lise and Andi rave about (and discuss) the first book in the Wayfarer series by sci fi author Becky Chambers, The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet (2015). 

Human Rosemary is running from her past, and lands a job on the Wayfarer, a wormhole-punching ship whose crew is made up of a variety of sentient beings (some humanoid, some not), and the ship’s AI stitched together into a family of sorts and working toward common goals. The crew lands a major contract for a wormhole job, but the job comes with some risks. This is the crew’s journey to that job, told through 9 different POVs of the crew members.  

It’s a fabulously-wrought road trip space opera with gorgeous world-building expressed through Chambers’ characters and their interpersonal relationships and cultural and historical backgrounds, which reveal themselves in layers. The characters that populate this beautifully written journey make this debut unforgettable and Andi and Lise are pretty sure that when you read it, you’ll immediately read the next two books in the series and then read the whole thing again.

Episode 30: Killjoys

Andi and Lise totally geeked out over the SyFy series Killjoys, which is about to enter its fourth season. It’s an absolutely delicious space opera that explores all levels of political intrigue and its effects on personal relationships.

Killjoys, in the show, are galactic bounty hunters that operate in a four-planet system called the Quad, which is beholden to “The Company,” which in turn is tied to a group of families called “The Nine,” who have worked hand-in-glove with the Company to leverage political and cultural influence. It’s a hierarchical society based on class ties, but also blood and political ties. The Company has, of course, extended its greedy and often corrupt power grabs all over the Quad, stripping areas of their resources and leaving godawful pollution and crap in its wake.

This is the backdrop for an intriguing maelstrom of excellent storylines!

Andi and Lise highly recommend this show.

Episode 8: Dark Matter

Andi and Lise really dig the TV series Dark Matter, which airs on the SyFy network. It’s a space opera, which is one of Andi’s all-time fave genres (and Lise’s!) but it’s got some really excellent elements that make it super watchable. Plus, diverse cast.

Six people emerge from stasis on a space ship and none of them know who they are or how they got there. Plus, there’s an android (played by Lost Girl’s Zoie Palmer) who also has to have her memory wiped. So six humans with no idea what they’re doing on this vessel and as the series progresses, they realize that they have shady pasts and even shadier business dealings in a galaxy ruled by mega-corporations vying for power. The six have to learn how to stick together though they have no idea who they are, and both Lise and Andi love how the show explores the idea of how who we are is determined, to an extent, by our memories.
